Karla_Upstart pic b&wKarla Healion has a Masters in Film Studies from Trinity College Dublin, where she specialised in female subjectivity and completed with a grade equivalent to a first. Karla was also the founder and director of the Dublin Feminist Film Festival for four years, an annual event celebrating women in front and behind the camera. She has directed and edited two shorts, with a third in development at the moment, and has worked on various films for Still Films including feature documentaries Lost in France (2017) and Kevin Roche: The Quiet Architect (2017).

Karla is interested in the social and transformative power of the arts, and has also been involved in many grass roots organisations and campaigns, including ‘alternative history’ walking tours, reconstructing derelict sites for public use, and reappraising forgotten works by women. In a former life she worked in media management, wrote about music, and was a professional DJ. Karla collects records and you might still catch her behind the decks on a rare occasion.
