Migrant domestic workers are often voiceless and excluded from mainstream media. They battle multiple forms of discrimination; as women, migrants and domestic workers, which create barriers to their full participation in society.
The ‘Hidden Voices’ project created the space for members of Domestic Workers Action Group (DWAG) to have their voices heard, and present their own picture of the world in which they live, highlighting the experiences that many migrant women face working in private homes in Ireland.
A community work approach to achieving positive social change underpins the work of DWAG. This project involved the group members in decision making at every stage, from planning and structuring the films, to
directing, scripting and filming. A series of workshops on sound and camera techniques were facilitated by Still Films, creating the opportunity for the group to learn new skills in documentary filmmaking in addition to documenting their stories.
The Migrant Rights Centre Ireland is a national organisation working to promote justice, empowerment and equality for migrant workers and their families. Their You Tube channel is here.
